EDUCATING A VILLAGE

(I apologize for the changing font styles and sizes.  It's not letting me be consistent).

MENSTRUPEDIA

Have you heard of Menstrupedia.com?  Here's an article in the Huffington Post about their impressive comic book that educates girls about menstruation.

A GREAT VIDEO

Here's a Young woman in Kenya explaining about the Days for Girls kits.  Nicely done--makes me want to go sew some shields and liners.

IN NEPAL

BBC 100 Women names 100 influential and inspirational women around the world every year.   Here's an article about Khrishnamaya, one of the women honored last month, who is challenging traditional attitudes toward menstruating women

MENSTRUAL EQUALITY

Congresswoman Grace Long writes about the Menstrual Equality Act for all of 2017.    A great advocate--she has met with DFG founder Celeste Mergens.

VISIT KENYA

Please remember to submit your entry to win a trip to Kenya.  David's Tea is giving away two trips (for two)--one to a Canadian entrant and one to an entrant from the U.S.  Entries have to be submitted before 9 p.m. PST on March 10th.  Entries submitted via this link will earn me another entry--better odds are good.  I'd love to win that trip and be able to take hundreds more kits/supplies to Kenyan girls and women!

CANADIAN QUILTER

There's a well-written feature article about Days for Girls in the new issue of Canadian Quilter magazine.  You can read it here.

MORE AND MORE VOLUNTEERS

Not only is our chapter often being joined by new volunteers on each of our workdays, Days for Girls International is growing around the world.  At the beginning of 2017, there were 792 teams and chapters, and now, in less than two months, we're up to 852!  When DFG started in 2008, it took 3 years to get 50 teams.  Word of mouth is so important!  So many people who want to help have told me that they had no idea that this was a big issue around the world.  Do tell your friends about Days for Girls.  If people want to donate, here's the link.

Oregon now has two chapters (Central Oregon and Eugene/Springfield), and five teams (Medford, Boring, North Portland, Southwest Portland, and a new one in Monmouth).  The leader of the Monmouth team may be able to join us March 4th.

OUR MARCH WORKDAY

If you sew or serge well, please bring your machine on Saturday.  Thanks to all the wonderful, hard-working non-sewing volunteers last time, we have an incredible amount of bags and liners that need the next step of sewing or serging.  Amazing!

I've learned that Our Sewing Room is double-booked for that day--Quilts of Valor volunteers will also be working there.  Do join us a for a productive and cozy workday!

HALF THE SKY

I highly recommend you read Half the Sky, turning oppression into opportunity for women worldwide, by Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn.  Both Eugene and Springfield public libraries have copies.  I sign off with an African proverb I found in that book:

You educate a boy, and you're educating an individual.
You educate a girl, and you're educating an entire village.
