A VERY BUSY EARLY AUGUST

MAKING KITS IN LEBANON

I enjoy reading about how Days for Girls is spreading and reaching individuals around the world, but also groups created because of DFG.  Here's a great article about women in Lebanon getting together to make kits for refugees.

It talks about the friendships formed.  I agree--I love having met the great group who volunteer with us, and really look forward to our workdays.

KITS FOR REFUGEE PROJECT

What a wonderful, huge project!  To celebrate its 11th birthday this fall, Days for Girls International asked teams and chapters around the world  to contribute 11,000 kits to refugee girls and women in each of three countries.  World Vision came in as a partner, and increased the impact to four countries--Lebanon, South Sudan, Somalia and Afghanistan.

We pledged 500 kits, and completed assembling and boxing them last week.  There was space left in the 11th box, so we added 27 more kits.  We met Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday of last week.  We accomplished a lot at our regular Saturday workday.

But there was more to be done!  A million thanks to all of you who were able to pitch in Saturday and on the following days.

Extra kudos go to Noël and Chris who contributed the U-Haul boxes the kits needed to be packed in, and Jana who trucked them to the collection point in Washington, saving us the huge cost and effort of shipping them.

I can't imagine how bleak life must be for people living in refugee camps . . . and how much worse it would be for a girl or woman with no means of dealing with her period.  We're changing that part for 527 females.  I can't wait to hear what the final totals are.

TABLE SALE AT OUR SEWING ROOM

Thanks to Mary Jo and Don for hosting a fabric sale on August 10.  I think they ended up with about 9 or 10 vendors, each renting a few tables.  Most were quilters reducing their fabric stashes, Marsha was selling her fabric line, patterns and tools and I was selling from my stash and those of others who chipped in items.

We netted a little more than last time, but that was after I made a few purchases of perfect fabric that had a very low price.  But the big bonus was that at the end, most of the other vendors said I could take anything that would work well for Days for Girls.

The fabric atop the cart was Adonna's amazing contribution to Days for Girls!
And there was more from other generous supporters!
Wow--what a delightful finale to an enjoyable day!  My washer and dryer have been busy.

NEXT WORKDAY

Mark your calendars to join us September 7!
